The Madras Crocodile Bank Trust

Founded in 1976 as a gene pool for the vanishing species of Indian Crocodilians, the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust soon evolved into the Centre for Herpetology and became the backbone of herpetological research and conservation in the country. Over thirty years later, amongst many other endeavours, it is the cornerstone for Gharial conservation in the country, has produced numerous publications and films on various herpeto-fauna and conservation issues. It also conducts freshwater turtle captive breeding program and is striving to improve husbandry standards for reptiles in zoos and parks.

At MCBT, you will be involved in the daily activities and maintenance of species of the park, such as the turtles, snakes, lizards and over two thousand crocodiles. The public education and awareness is of utmost importance to MCBT. Combined with various organisational and administrative operations, you will be made aware of the research and conservation studies. Conversely, this will also develop your interest in the crocodile census and shifting animal.

The activities include:
Daily activities like cleaning of enclosures and husbandry
Assisting the ongoing research
Actively participating in all animal-related work
Education programmes
Visitor interface
Creating new and informative exhibit material
Field trips with the Irula snake catchers and other places of interest
