Agumbe Rainforest Research Station

The Agumbe Rainforest Research Station (ARRS) was set up in 2005 with a mission to research and conserve King Cobras in the region. This part of the country is believed to have the highest density of the species in South India. Since it has grown into a field station, it now supports research and conservation of any aspect of the rainforest. Amongst the many research and conservation projects in the ARRS, the world’s only radio tracking of King Cobras is being conducted.

The activities in the ARRS are elaborate and involve a large number of tasks. We engage you in all activities from library cataloguing to tracking a King Cobra in the wild. Even the daily chores such as climate monitoring, agriculture, fence repairs and tree surveys remain as significant in the project.

Other activities include:
Radio telemetry of King Cobras
Photographic inventories of flora and fauna
Ecology of Draco Dussumieri (Flying lizards)
Amphibian population dynamics
Canopy access studies
Tree surveys
Agriculture at the station
General maintenance
Creation of educational material
